7-year old boy killed when playing with gun with brothers

Jaymee Steward, age 7
A 7-year old boy, Jaymee Steward, was at home with his two brothers, ages 4 and 13, when the three of them found a loaded Derringer-style .22-caliber handgun, which they thought was a toy. The gun went off, injuring the 7-year old with life-threatening injuries, which eventually led to fatality.

Adults were home at the time of the shooting. Parents and grandparents share the home.

"This is a terrible tragedy for the family," said Major Michelle Jones with Morristown Police. "What we'd like to say, no matter you think they know about safety make sure they're unloaded and stored safely."

The 7-year old eventually died from his wound.

The gun belonged to a family member, Jones said, although she wouldn't say which one. The boy's parents and grandparents lived at the house.
Authorities said they won't file charges.
Investigators and prosecutors concluded no laws were broken, Jones said.
"There are no legal requirements to have that gun locked up," she said.

Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.
